The Sound of Silence

Task: The song, "Sound of Silence," by Simon and Garfunkel, makes me think of Holden in The Catcher in the Rye?  Can you guess why?  Listen carefully to the lyrics:

Choose an example from the lyrics and write a short paragraph in which you connect them to the themes, symbols, events, or characters in The Catcher in the Rye.  Post your response below:

  1. hello darkness my old friend symbolizes how holden hides in the dark his whole life and stays in the shadow trying to stay a nobady and not be a phony like all those somebodies

    1. Joe I agree with you completely. Holden is staying in the shadows and is hiding who he is. Holden calls others phony because he cannot deal with who he is, but he acts like a phony in reality.

  2. I agree with Joe, in the way that The Sound Of Silence has to do with how Holden and the narrator of the song both sort of hide in the darkness, and how instead of being a phony like everyone else, he'd rather be himself, and that makes him unique.

  3. In The Sound of Silence the song relates to how Holden views being by himself. This song makes me think of Holden being lonely and depressed when he is in New York. The lines “Hello, darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again.” Makes me think about how Holden has been depressed before and now it has “creped” up on him again. He is falling back to his old habits and that is not a good thing because Holden will do anything to get rid of the feeling.

  4. This song, The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel, is a great way to express how Holden feels. It’s all about being alone, walking down dark, cold, long roads, and never disturbing silence. Holden isn’t one to speak up about things; he really just keeps to himself most of the time. He also feels like he isn’t going anywhere, like down a long worthless road. It also talks about how a dream still creeps up on him and he can’t forget it. This completely relates to Holden and his situation with Allie. He is full of regret and he is constantly thinking about what he could’ve done or what he misses about Allie. Another part in the song that is very similar to Holden’s situation is when it says “’Fools,’ said I, ‘you do not know Silence like a cancer grows.’” This is just like how Holden calls everybody phony’s and thinks nobody understands him. All in all these two subjects are very similar and you could relate them to one another very easily.

  5. “Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
    And no one dare
    Disturb the sound of silence”
Holden feels that everyone is the same and that they all have the same life and do the same things. He also feels that no one knows why they are doing something they just do it because that’s how the “game is played” and because everyone else is doing it. In Holden minds no one has the guts or individuality to change things (disturb the sound of silence).

  7. “ ‘Fools’ said I, ‘you do not know silence like a cancer grows’.” I think that these lyrics are saying that the more isolated and alone you keep yourself, the worse it gets over time. These lyrics remind me of Holden because he has kept himself away from having real connections with people for so long that he’s at a point in his life where he really feels like he’s going crazy. I think the “silence” within him has basically grown like a cancer (as the song says) and is practically engulfing him now and pulling him down into a deeper depression.

  8. The song, "The Sound of Silence", by Simon and Garfunkel, relates to The Catcher in the Rye, because, in the book, Holden always spends time to himself. He always cares about himself. Instead of being phony, he would rather be himself. He always stays in the dark.

  9. hello darkness is one of many examples that relate to the Cather in the rye . hello darkness means that Holden is use to be alone and he likes it.

    1. I agree that Holden is used to being alone, but I don't think he truely likes it. I think he makes it seem that he can be alone and he doesn't want to have any relationship with anyone, but I don't believe that's what he really feels inside.

  10. The song "The Sound of Slience" relates to Holdens opinions in a very apparent way. For example, the line "People talking without speaking and people hearing without listening", relates to the opinion that people do everything without true thought. This quote represents Holden's opinion on the phonies of the world.

  11. The Sound of Silence relates to Holden because it expresses someone that’s alone a lot and in the dark and that’s how Holden appears throughout Cather in the Rye. In the song it tells how he would rather remain himself than give in and if it means being a long he’d rather do that than be a phony. “Hello darkness, my old friend, I’ve come to play with you again” shows how Holden has gone through a depressing state of mind and it’s starting to come back again. He feels as if he’s not going anywhere and this makes him said and on a silent road that’s just going nowhere.

  12. Emily, I completely agree with everything you said. I think you really captured exactly how Holden feels and then compared them to the song in great detail. Nice job

  13. The theme going through out the song and the book seems to be loneliness “Hello Darkness, my old friend”, “In restless dreams I walked alone”, “No one dare disturb the sound of silence”. It kind of relates to Holden’s depression and Holden’s views on things. The second stanza of the song really reminds me of how Holden walks around by himself in the city, lonely, depressed and maybe even scared. Towards the end of the song it says something about something being said on the walls and it reminds me of when Holden is bothered about the word on the wall. This song is very similar to The Catcher in the Rye.

  14. The Sound of Silence is a song made by Simon and Garfunkel. It can easily be related with J.D Salinger’s book: Catcher In The Rye. The way I can relate this to The Catcher in the rye is that It seems like it could be Holden thinking to himself. Holden is the main character of the book and he is the type of person that would rather be alone then in a group. The line “Hello, darkness, my old friend. I’ve to come to talk with you again” can easily seem like Holden because he is always alone and he has no one to talk to. He constantly pushes people away as if he doesn’t care about anyone else but himself.

  15. this reminds me of how Holden thinks everyone is phoney. like beople hearing but not listening.

  16. I feel that this song represents Holden's depression. The lines "Hello, darkness my old friend, I've come to talk to you again" and "In restless dreams I walked alone." I think clearly represent Holden's feelings about his depression. He is alone and darkness is his only friend, and he confines "in the darkness" to say. He doesn't really tell anyone what is going on with him through the entire book.

  17. In the song The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel, there are a lot of lyrics that can relate to Catcher in the Rye. For example: "People talking without speaking, People hearing without listening." This could represent the 'Phonies' that Holden references throughout the novel.

  18. I think the line "silence like a cancer" refers how not being able to share your thoughts and emotions, can make you crazy or be mad. When you hold in thoughts or emotions, you keep holding in more, like a snowball keeps getting bigger as you push it down the hill, which resembles how quickley cancer can spread.

  19. The lyrics to the song written by Simon and Garfunkel relate to the book Catcher in the Rye. I chose the line "Fools, you do not know". To me this line seems like something Holden would say, as he is refering to the phonies around him in society. Holden is saying you never know anything from phonies because you dont know if they are just acting or being themselves; there for you can not trust them.

  20. Gabby, great job you fallowed the task, and explained your reasoning. Although i picked the same quote as you i did not realize the other ways it could not be interpreted as, but you changed that. Great Job!

  21. "People talking without speaking and people hearing without listening", shows how Holden is like a hippocrat. I say this becasue he always says how people are phonies and never listening to anyone, but inside he is the one who really does this. This song shows Holdens imaturaity.

  22. "Silence like a cancer grows" respresents Holden's feelings throughout the whole book. At the start, Holden kept his feelings bottled up, but later became more desperate for someone to talk to. His feeling and thoughts kept growing until he experienced some kind of 'break down' that we, as the reader, are not sure about.

    1. That's a good point, Julieta. Holden does 'grow' from the beginning of the book to the end. He was bottled up at the start and then at the end, in the part with Phoebe especially, he shared some feelings by crying.

  23. “Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
    And no one dare
    Disturb the sound of silence"
This relates to how Holden feels that everybody is the same. He feels like everybody is fake and phony and that everyone has the same life and they have very similar ruitines.

  24. The song the Sound of Silence relates to the book Catcher in the Rye because people often say silence is the loudest noise. This song also shows how someone is alone and lonely. A line in the song “In restless dreams I walked alone” relates to Holden because in the time Holden was in Manhattan Holden went everywhere alone. Another line in the song is “’Fools’, said I, ‘You do not know’” which relates a lot to Holden because Holden always talks about everyone around his is a phony.

  25. There are many examples in the song 'The Sound of Silence' that can relate to The Catcher in the Rye. "People talking without hearing, People hearing without listening," can be referred to phonies, one of the most used words in Holden's vocabulary.

  26. This song, The Sound of Silence connects very well to the character of Holden. The first two lines, "Hello darnkness, my old friend ive come to talk with you again," A friend is someone you are close with, one you are very familiar with. HOlden is very familiar with depression, as he very often finds himself slipping into saddness.

  27. I think the lyrics " i walk alone. narrow streets" relate to Holden because holden usually walks alone in the streets sometimes no thinking or sometimes thinking of about his life, phonies or having his suicidal moments.

  28. " And the sign said "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sounds of silence" " The closing lyrics to Simon and Garfunkel's song, the sound of silence, encompass the sobriety of Holden’s mind, his ideals for an artist, and his dramatic, tragic nature. “People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening” relates to the phoniness Holden sees in society. The mention of people not truly listening reoccurs throughout Catcher in the Rye, as Holden feels no one really listens hard enough to understand what he tries to tell them.

  29. The song, the sound of silence, realates to Holden's feelings in CITR because he is often alone and isolated. Holden feels like he is alone in the world, and suffers from depression. The song is very reflected of that, esecially the line "people taling without speaking, people talking without listening" Holden often feels people are phoney and dont mean what they say, only wanted to hear the sound of their own voices.

    1. Great line choices. Holden has no time for superficial conversations - he sees them as fake. Maybe this is why he creates fake names for himself throughout the novel.

  30. "Hello darkness once again". Holden, throughout the book of Catcher in the Rye, is a depressed, lonely 16 years old. He drinks and smokes on end and doesn’t know where to go in life. This song, The Sound of Silence, can relate to Holden in many ways; but the quote “hello darkness once again” can relate to him the most because he always sees darkness and goes through trouble so he is getting use to it which fills into “once again.”

  31. when he says " hello darkness my old friend." he is refering to all of his friends thta have betryed him or done something to upset him it also is saying how he is depressed with his life>
