  1. In chapter 3 of Catcher in the Rye, we are introduced to Ackley, a fellow student of Holden when they are the only two not at the game, instead in their dorm. Ackley is described by Holden as, "tall, about 6 foot 4 and had lousy teeth". With the traits and descriptions that Holden gives, Ackley sounds like one of those kids who has little hygiene, or lack thereof. Ackley also asks several questions, which in the end really start annoying Holden. While Holden and Ackley are both loners in their own way, they are different too, in the fact that Holden is more independent and Ackley is more nosy and disrespectful to others. At one point, he is seen taking Holden's roommate's knee supporter. As you can tell by Holden's description, Ackley sounds like a disgusting, annoying young man, and Holden has every right to be frustrated with him whenever he sees Ackley.

  2. Ackley is a senior boy at Pency Prep and he lives in Ossenburger with Holden and Holden's roommate Stadlater. Ackley is a gross character and he usually spends time alone like Holden. He has pimples all over his face, his teeth look like they haven't ever been brushed, he has dirt under his nails and he has no table mannors. Ackley also has a terrible personality and is a nasty guy. He hates everyone, which is probably why he spends his time by himself. Ackley's real name is Robert but no one calls him this they all call him Ackley even Herb Gale, Ackley's roommate. -Paige Scanlan and Katherine Karle

  3. Ackley is a senior boy who goes to Pency Prep as well as Holden and Holden’s roommate Stradlater. He has pimples and his teeth look like they haven’t been cared for. He constantly picks out the dirt from underneath his nails and he lets it fall to the floor. He’s usually alone and doesn’t go out much to hang out with others or socialize with friends. He’s not very polite because as it says in the book he eats with his mouth open. The way Holden describes him makes him seem like a homeless person because he also says he has a bad personality and kind of a nasty person. His tendency to hate everyone probably contributes to him spending so much time alone. This being said I can make the assumption that he’s a very disorganized, unhygienic and all around nasty person. Ackley’s real name is Robert however no one calls him this even his roommate Herb Gale.

  4. Ackley is a senior and the next door roommate of Holden at Pencey, and is very annoying. He and Holden are probably the only ones that did go to the game. He is a little bit weird though, because he is introduced into the story from the shower that is in between both dorms. He starts to lurk around Holden’s room, picking up Holden’s possessions and asking about it, observing it as if he were some type of doctor or scientist, then putting it back incorrectly in the same spot. He has a horrible personality and has various pimples that cover his face like a pizza. Holden describes him as a guy that looks like he never has brushed his teeth before, that bite his nails down as much as he can possibly can, and is approximately six feet four. By: Juan and Oscar

  5. Ackley is a very unhygienic teenager; he has horrible teeth and doesn't brush them at all. He clearly doesn't wash his face either because he has a face full of acne. He also bites his nails, and believes if he cleans his nails it will make him become clean. He's also a particularly tall human being. He's also very irritating, he will go through all you stuff and touch your stuff. He hates it when you call him "Ackley Kid". In chapter 3 while he was cleaning his nails, he made Holden go get the scissor from the top shelf, no matter what. And then when he was actually cutting his nails, Holden asked him to cut them over the trash and he didn't listen until Holden yelled at him. So we learned that he isn't very clean and that he only listens when you yell at him. – Danielle and Maddie

  7. Ackley seems to be a very callous, critical and obnoxious character in the novel. Holden describes him as having very “mossy” teeth along with an extremely pimply face. Along with having a bit of an unpleasant appearance, he is extremely tall with round shoulders. Within chapter 3, he does certain specific things that really bother and irritate Holden. He clips his nails over the rug in Holden and Stradlater’s room and doesn’t quit until Holden literally screams at him to clip them over the table. Ackley has an intense hatred for Holden’s roommate (Stradlater) and criticizes him because he feels that he thinks very highly of himself. Just to bother Holden, Ackley goes around the room and starts picking up all of his personal belongings from the chiffonier. We think Ackley is a bit odd, sadistic as he gets happiness out of watching Holden get hit on the head with his tennis racket and enjoys getting under people’s skin. He probably has some sort of deep inner turmoil that causes him to act the way that he does towards others. By: Gabby and Brooke

  8. Ackley doesn't represent himself very well. He doesn't take care of himself, and his outward appearance doesn't do him any good. His teeth are yellow and crooked on account of him never brushing his teeth, so yellow people cringe at the sight of his mouth, and his face is full of popped, and red pimples. By reading chapter three, I can already tell Ackley is very immature and isn't the nicest of people. He hates almost everyone, and acts like he's some hot shot. On the other hand, he is tall, awkward, and sort of a loner, and I can't help but feel bad for him. Ackley is distracting to the point where you can not get anything done around him, Holden recalls. All in all, Ackley wouldn't be my first choice as a friend.

  9. Ackley is a senior boy who goes to Pencey Prep. Ackley is a bizarre kid. He often likes to spend time alone so no one can bother him. Everyone calls him Ackley; even his roommate Herb Gale even calls him Ackley. Ackley is a very filthy kid. His teeth looked mossy and if he ever came near you it would give you a nauseating feeling. He also has pimples ALL over his face. He’s tall and has red hair. He clips his toe nails in front of you and it is disgusting. Ackley is an inconsiderate type of person.

  12. Ackley was a senior, who has attended Pency prep for four years. He has horrible hygine. He's socially and physically awkward- being tall and gangly as well as having popped pimples all over his face. Ackley never brushes his teeth, but is always cleaning his nails. He always barges in to Holden's dorm rooom, even though he hates Holden's roommate Stradlaten. Ackley is also rude and has bad manners. In chapter three, Ackley barges into Holden’s room and cuts his nails on the floor. Holden asks him again and again to cut them on the table, but Ackley doesn’t respond until he’s yelled at. He doesn’t take the hint when Holden tries to get him to leave. He’s inconsiderate and does what he wants when he wants to.

  13. Ackley is a senoir at Pency Prep, he lives in Ossenburger dorm with Holden. He is very tall, has pimples, has bad teeth, and bad hygene over all. Ackley despises Stradlater, Stradlater is everything Ackley wants to be and even better. Even when Stradlater came into the dorm that Holden and Ackley were in, Stradlater said hi to him and Ackley ignored him, because he hates him too much just to even say to him. Ackley is self centered. For instance, Ackley started to clip his nails in Holden's dorm, Hplden asked to clip his nails over the table multiple times, and Ackley ignored him and went about his own business. Stradlater is kind and generous. For example, Holden said that if you said you like Stradlater's tie, that he would give it to you.

  14. Robert Ackley is a student at Pencey Prep and he lives in the room nextdoor to Holden. He is 18, a senior, and constantly reminds Holden that he is older than him. Ackley doesn't appear to have many friends, and has a burning hatred for Stradlater. He does not brush his teeth, and he has horrible acne. If you tell him to do something he will not listen, however, he gets very intimidated when someone yells at him. He isnt respectful for anyone elses space as he barges in whenever he wants and he cuts his nails onto the ground. He seems for the most part depressed, lonley, and sensitive when people put him down.

  15. In chapter three we are introduced to a new character named Ackley. Ackley is a senior at Pency Prep, and he has been there for the whole four years. He stands at a height of 6'4. He has noticeably crooked and yellow teeth, according to Holden are never brushed. He also, has pimples covering his face. He is very intrusive, while in Holden's dorm, Ackley goes about touching everything that doesn't belong to him. Ackley isn't a very good listener, so when Holden tells him to move away from the light he goes out of his way to do any such thing. By reading chapter three you can conclude that Ackley isn't a very pleasant person to be around and he is seemingly socially awkward.

  16. Ackley is a senior at Pency Prep. He shares a bathroom with Holden and his roommate. Holden is not a fan of Ackley, who is invasive and passive agressive. When Holden asks him to stop clipping his nails over the carpet he ignores him and does as he pleases. Ackley is antisocial and finds flaws in everyone around him, especially in Stradlater. A pet pave Holden was of Ackley is that he doesnt brush his teeth and while his nails are clean and neat, his teeth are "mossy" and yellow.

  17. Ackley is Holden's roommate at Pency Prep, he is tall, skinny and has bad hygiene. He rarely brushes his teeth giving them a yellow, mossy texture and has a face covered with pimples and sores. He also lacks boundaries, Ackley talks constantly and plays with Holden’s things, making it impossible for him to focus on is work. Ackley has a bitter outlook towards other people and the rest of the world because he has so many physical and mental short comings. This trait does not stop him from acting like a big shot and he often pretends to be something he’s not. Ackley does not have many friends because of this and Holden can’t help but feel sympathy for his roommate.

  18. Ackley is 6 feet 4 inches, frail, and ugly. Covered in pimples, Ackley is a person nobody wants to be around. He is a young, annoying kid in an 18 year old body. He seems to us that everything he does is something to get on your nerves. He tries to start conversations with people but nobody wants to talk with him. I don’t feel bad for him because he takes it upon himself to be annoying and anti-social. Ackley is a weird kid and it is his fault for being that way. Ackley needs to grow up in life.
